History of the Cooma-Monaro Historical Society

Founded 16 August 1957

The Cooma-Monaro Historical Society was established following a public meeting held at the Cooma Council Chambers on 16 August 1957, in response to community concern that important local history was being lost with the passing of older residents.

The then Mayor of Cooma, Alderman N. L. Hain, described the Society’s formation as “a big move in the local interest,” aimed at preserving valuable historical knowledge for future generations. The initiative received strong support from community and civic leaders, including Sir William Hudson, Commissioner of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Authority, which also provided early financial support for historical research.

From its inception, the Society set out to encourage the study of Cooma Monaro—history, and to collect, preserve, and protect documents, photographs, artefacts, and places of local historical significance. Support from the Royal Australian Historical Society further strengthened its standing within the historical community of New South Wales.

Who We Are Today

The Cooma-Monaro Historical Society (CMHS) is a volunteer-run, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to preserving, researching, and sharing the rich and diverse history of the Monaro region.

Building on the vision established in 1957, the Society cares for an extensive collection of documents, photographs, research files, artefacts, artworks, and local historical records compiled over many decades. CMHS supports local and family history research, delivers talks and public programs, and works actively to ensure Monaro heritage is preserved and accessible for future generations.

The Society operates through the commitment of its members and volunteers and is funded primarily through memberships, donations, and the sale of publications. CMHS maintains strong connections with the wider historical sector and remains affiliated with the Royal Australian Historical Society and the History Council of NSW.

Above all, CMHS continues to uphold the founding principle expressed in 1957:
that local history matters, and that safeguarding it is a responsibility shared by the whole community.
